Kaitiakitanga – Fishing Quota

Quota means a certain amount. To prevent over fishing we have set quota or limits to how much fish or shellfish is taken both recreationally and commercially. Recreational fishing is just the everyday person while commercial fishing is a license to catch a large amount of fish during the fishing season. e.g. 100, 000, 000 tons. There are more than 76% of native fish at risk of extinction. If you take too many fish home to eat, there might not be enough fish for anyone else and the extinction of fish is pretty high so we need to shorten up our fishing. We need to save our fish, don’t pollute. We need to take the right amount of things in the ocean and the right size for the next generation.

I will be a voice to prevent this resource being depleted and to save for future generations.

Kaitiakitanga-Rapauara Playground

We have been learning about kaitiakitanga about looking after Rapuara play area in front of the juniors. We have learnt that kids have been going through the bushes and the plants in the garden and wrecking them, they’re basically like bulldozers and the trees and plants were their target. The plants have been demolished and the tree has had all of its branches that are alive facing in one direction.

Here is a list of things about this tree

-wind

-branches broken

-dead branches

-kids hanging off them

-the tree is facing one direction

Kaitiakatanga is how we respect the grounds around us and we have also learnt about how to help the garden from the little kids because they run threw the bushes and break them by twisting them backwards, they’ve been treading through the bushes and garden, wrecking everything around them. I am learning that kaitiakitanga for me means to be a guardian and look after the environment for future generations.
